Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacons or EPIRBs are compact, buoyant and portable emergency signalling devices specifically designed to transmit a radio distress signal to alert emergency authorities throughout the world of a need for rescue.

Once activated, an EPIRB will continuously transmit a specific encoded radio signal on 406 MHz capable of detection by COSPAS/SARSAT satellites throughout the world whilst simultaneously transmitting a 121.5 MHz homing signal.

Following activation and satellite detection, the emergency location and specific beacon data can then be relayed to the appropriate search authorities. EPIRBs are registered with the relevant rescue authority and following activation a registered EPIRB will provide the rescue authority with the owner and emergency contact details.

EPIRB registration is a MUST as it greatly enhances a rescue and shortens response times.
